Peter Metzger

Assistant Secretary for Office of Intelligence and Analysis Peter Metzger

Peter Metzger was confirmed by the Senate to serve as the Assistant Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis on December 18, 2025.

Prior to his confirmation, he served as a Professional Staff Member on the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence where his portfolio included covert action, the Middle East, and a number of specialized intelligence programs.

Assistant Secretary Metzger previously served in the White House on the staff of the National Security Council (NSC) as a Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, where he was responsible for drafting and implementing documents and strategies foundational to Presidential decisions on Middle East and North Africa policy. He has also served as the Director for the Levant on the NSC and as Syria Director in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. Earlier in his career, Assistant Secretary Metzger served in the private sector as an advisor to the Intelligence Community on global counterterrorism matters and as in-house counsel to that firm

Assistant Secretary Metzger is an attorney and a former U.S. Marine officer. He holds a J.D. from Wake Forest University and a B.A. from Washington & Lee University.
