The Labor Department today announced that 180,000 jobs were created in March and employment estimates for January and February were revised up, adding another 32,000 jobs. Our economy has now added jobs for 43 straight months and the unemployment rate remains low at 4.4%. The unemployment rate is low, job creation is strong and steady, and wages are rising. Secretary Paulson has said that he sees the U.S. economy transitioning to a sustainable rate of growth. This optimistic view of the economy is underpinned by our view of the labor market as being fundamentally healthy, said Asst Sec Swagel.
