Secretary Geithner Hosts Conference Call with State Attorneys General to Discuss Need for Comprehensive Financial Reform

WASHINGTON – Earlier today, Secretary Tim Geithner hosted a conference call with Attorneys General from throughout the country to discuss the urgent need for comprehensive financial reform, including creating a strong and independent consumer financial protection agency that would set rules of the road for Wall Street and protect Americans against financial abuse.  He highlighted the critical role the Attorneys General would play under the legislation in enforcing state laws and rules issued by the new agency.

The Secretary thanked the Attorneys General for their pioneering and important work in protecting Americans from predatory mortgage lenders and others who prey on American citizens.  He asked that they report trends in fraud and illegal conduct to Treasury to help develop a coordinated and effective national response.
