WASHINGTON – Today, Secretary of the Treasury Scott K.H. Bessent met with Minister of Finance Mehmet Simsek and Central Bank Governor Fatih Karahan of Türkiye. Secretary Bessent and Minister Simsek discussed the United States’ ongoing maximum pressure campaign against Iran and Iranian proxies.
During their talks, Secretary Bessent urged the Minister to take action towards preventing abuse of the Turkish financial system by U.S.-designated Russian actors and terrorist groups. The Secretary also inquired as to current and future actions by the Turkish government towards addressing Turkish market volatility, and Türkiye’s uncertain economic outlook.
