WASHINGTON – Last Friday, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent met with European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič. The Secretary and Commissioner discussed the new U.S.-EU Action Plan for Critical Minerals, as well as progress made on the 2025 EU-U.S. Joint Statement, including the EU’s significant investments in American autos, pharmaceuticals, and energy.
Secretary Bessent highlighted to Minister Šefčovič important joint priorities on economic security, investment screening, and addressing risks from overcapacity production. The Secretary also underscored the importance of addressing Iran’s threat to the Strait of Hormuz and noted the U.S. G20 Presidency’s focus on the efforts to keep food and fertilizer supply chains well-functioning.
