On April 14, 1865 President Lincoln was assassinated and Vice President Johnson used this office at the Treasury building as President until Mrs. Lincoln left the White House.
Andrew Johnsons' use of the office provides the historic time period to which it is restored (ca. 1865). The restoration included reproduction gas light fixtures and original antique furnishings.
Andrew Johnson maintained his office in the Treasury building for 6 weeks as a "temporary White House". During this time, Johnson worked to calm the country and gain support for his presidency.
The office used by Andrew Johnson was that of Treasury Secretary Hugh McCulloch. The office was two rooms and served as the office of the Secretary from 1864-1875. It was decorated by the New York design firm, Pottier & Stymus.
The outer office to the suite of two rooms provided clerical support for the Secretary and includes views across of the East Wing of the White House.
