The Cash Room is the largest single space in the Treasury building and one of the most beautiful rooms in Washington, DC.
When the Cash Room opened in 1869 it functioned as a banking room, supplying area commercial banks with coins and currency from the Treasury vaults.
Services in the Cash Room were available to the general public including cashing of government checks, redeeming silver and gold certificates and selling Treasury bonds.
The Cash Room ceased serving as a public and commercial banking room in 1976 and was restored in subsequent years for use as a ceremonial meeting space for the Treasury Department.
The fine craftsmanship of the Cash Room is evident in the details of the room from the carving of the marble, the gold leaf plaster ceiling and the intricate cast bronze railing and door grilles.
