WASHINGTON – At 1:30 p.m., TODAY, January 23, 2012, a senior Treasury official will conduct a conference call on background to discuss today’s designation of Iran's third-largest bank, Bank Tejarat, for providing financial services to a number of Iranian banks and firms subject to international sanctions for their involvement in Iran’s weapons of mass destruction (WMD) proliferation activities. With today’s action, 22 Iranian-linked banks, including all of Iran’s largest state-owned banks, have been sanctioned by the U.S. based on their involvement in Iran’s illicit activities.
The senior Treasury official will also provide an overview of the Obama Administration’s efforts to sanction Iran’s financial sector and apply the maximum amount of pressure on the Iranian regime to change its strategic calculus on its nuclear program.
