Secretary O'Neill Hosts Economic Discussions with Chinese Officials

Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill today began meetings with Chinese economic officials as he co-chairs the annual U.S.-China Joint Economic Committee (JEC) meetings at the Treasury Department in Washington. Federal Reserve Board Governor Donald Kohn, SEC Commissioner Roel Campos, and OCC Senior Deputy Comptroller Jonathan Fiechter, joined Secretary O’Neill when the meetings began this morning. In addition to the Chinese Finance Minister Xiang Huaicheng , the Chinese delegation also included representatives of the Central Bank, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Planning Commission, the Ministry of Justice, the Securities Regulatory Commission, and the State Council. Combating terrorist finance, financial services liberalization, emerging market development strategies, prison labor, and macroeconomic developments, among other issues, are on the agenda. Secretary O’Neill and Minister Xiang also met separately for bilateral discussions. The two officials will hold a press conference at 5:00PM this afternoon at the conclusion of the meetings.
