The Treasury building's north wing was completed in 1869, the final wing of the building which began construction in 1833.
The north wing faces Pennsylvania Avenue at the corner of 15 Street in downtown Washington, DC. This location, next to the White House is at a historically busy location for business, commerce and the federal government.
While the architecture of the north wing has changed little over the years, Pennsylvania Avenue and the plaza and landscaping in front of the building have changed. In this early 20th century image, a fountain sits in the center of the north plaza.
The four facades of the Treasury building are all derived from Greek temple architectural styles. Popular for government buildings, this Classical Revival style in the United States reflected the buildings of Ancient Greece and Rome.
From the Treasury Annex building across the street on Pennsylvania Avenue the sweeping panorama includes the Treasury building, the Washington Monument and the National Mall.
