Visit will Address Efforts to Implement International Sanctions against Iran and Syria, Cut Off Resources to Terrorist Organizations and Support Transitioning Economies in the Region
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced today that Deputy Secretary Neal S. Wolin will travel to Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia on September 11-14, 2012. The Deputy Secretary will engage with governments in the region on international efforts to increase pressure on the regimes in Iran and Syria through financial sanctions and provide support to transitioning economies in the region.
On Tuesday, September 11, the Deputy Secretary will meet with senior government and financial industry officials in Beirut, Lebanon to discuss efforts to prevent abuse of the Lebanese financial sector by illicit actors. The Deputy Secretary will also discuss the need for Lebanese banks and regulatory authorities to remain vigilant against the evasion of sanctions by Iran and Syria.
On Wednesday, September 12, Deputy Secretary Wolin will meet with senior government officials in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to discuss our continued partnership with the Saudi government in the fight against terrorism, as well as efforts to increase pressure on the regimes in Iran and Syria.
He will also discuss the Deauville Partnership, through which the United States and our international partners are providing resources and expertise to help transitioning economies in the Middle East and North Africa boost private sector growth, create jobs, and improve economic governance.
On Thursday, September 13 and Friday, September 14, the Deputy Secretary will meet with senior government officials in Tunis, Tunisia, to affirm the United States’ strong commitment to supporting Tunisia’s democratic transition and discuss the resources and expertise the United States and our international partners are providing to help Tunisia and other transitioning economies in the region.
