How do I make an appointment to research at the Treasury Library?

Call (202) 622-2000 and ask to be transferred to the Treasury Library.  If a librarian is not available, please leave your name, phone number, email address, and a brief message describing your request.  We will follow up with you as soon as possible.  Please note that advance notice of a minimum of one business day is required for entry.  All visitors to the Treasury Library must be cleared by the Secret Service.

Where is the Treasury Library located?

The Treasury Library is located in the Freedman’s Bank Building, Room 1020.  The entrance to the Freedman’s Bank Building is located at 720 Madison Place, NW in Washington. The nearest Metro stops are Metro Center (red line) and McPherson Square (orange, blue, and silver lines).  Parking is available for a fee in area garages.

May I borrow a book from the Treasury Library?

The Treasury Library’s collection circulates to affiliates of Treasury’s Department Offices.  We are willing to lend select items to other libraries through interlibrary loan.  Call (202) 622-2000 to inquire if an item is available through interlibrary loan.

What is the oldest book in your collection?

Among the oldest items in the library’s holdings is a first edition of Secretary Albert Gallatin’s A Sketch of the Finances of the United States published in 1796.  Our copy is extra special because it was the book Secretary Gallatin gave to Secretary Hamilton.  How do we know this bit of history?  This letter from 1960 documents the book’s provenance.
