Visit Part of Treasury’s Continued Global Engagement aimed at Increasing Economic Pressure on the Iranian Regime, Implementing Sanctions against Iran’s Central Bank
WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of the Treasury today announced that Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence David S. Cohen will travel to the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and Germany, January 30 – February 2, 2012 to discuss the implementation of U.S. sanctions against the Central Bank of Iran.
Continuing the Treasury Department’s close coordination with partners around the world to increase economic pressure on the Iranian regime for its refusal to meet its international obligations concerning its illicit nuclear program, Under Secretary Cohen will meet with senior government officials in London, England; Bern and Geneva, Switzerland; and Berlin, Germany.
During his trip, Under Secretary Cohen will consult with host governments about new U.S. sanctions. He will discuss the importance of the recent EU decision to join the U.S. in a ban of Iranian oil imports, freeze of Central Bank of Iran assets and designation of Bank Tejarat and Tidewater. These actions along with the continued cooperation of the international community to enforce existing sanctions will make it clear to Iran that it has the choice to engage in meaningful, productive discussions about the nature of its nuclear program or face increasing economic hardship and political isolation.
